Ladakh Climate Protest

Thousands are protesting in Ladakh, India, demanding constitutional provisions to protect the region’s ecology and autonomy over land and agriculture decisions. The region, affected by climate change and territorial disputes, is seeing worsened conditions due to militarisation. Activist Sonam Wangchuk is leading a “climate fast” in freezing temperatures to highlight these issues. The protesters seek statehood and local legislative powers, with discussions with Indian officials yet to yield results.

An uncommon artefact of Global news, less likely to self-propagate through communications networks in the West as it is not 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 concerned with the business and politics of the science and technology that generates and sustains those networks. Of course, the displaced thermodynamic costs of technological complexity are as inequitably distributed as are the benefits. The area of Ladakh is situated in remote Northern India near China and Pakistan, neighbouring Jammu and Kashmir. I expect that ongoing climate disruption may lead to mass migrations in a region that is already something of a geopolitical powder keg.
