Signification supersedes the semantics it claims as its own. The accuracy of a representation is subordinate to the act of representing. This is also how compression functions in cultural systems: it abbreviates by cross-reference, by the innvocation of possibility. The methods of system self-replication become more important than the discrete snapshots and timeslices with which we interpret this copying mechanism as intelligible.
Science is critically important but my takeaway from the art in the linked document is that the representation of facts is now transparently detached from the facts they claim or otherwise aspire to represent. This displacement, offset and deferment is communication and it regulates and shapes us through these abstractions.
Star-Lord or Silver Surfer? It doesn’t matter. The relevance is of the referential, relational bond and manifest possibility that semiotic entanglement invokes. This is not a new form of reciprocal systemic dependency, but it is what’s happens when technologically-mediated communications systems encounter themselves at scale.
Signifying nothingness or signifying science, a next logical step might just be to achieve both, simultaneously. Discontinuities in art capture this essence.
