Existence and experience within a cultural and technological system of accelerating complexity is one of an enforced routine of playing constant catch-up with whatever limited range or scope of information management and networked communication applies within one’s own professional and personal life. Attempting to keep track of the endlessly unfurling Baroque curlicues and relentlessly iterating patterned flows of information and interpreted or shifting meanings leaves little time for big-picture comprehension or analysis. This is the point at which generalisations and other, related, narrative or symbolic tools and mnemonics find their raison d’etre in colloquial communication: as methods and frameworks of complexity-compression and cognitive comfort in a complex and rapidly evolving information environment.
