Generative AI is changing the world but it doesn’t really take much imagination to understand the transformative cultural shift invoked by this new technology is really only the revisitation of what has come before. Creativity in the visual arts has almost exclusively been a process defined by the endless revisitation and recursively self-propagating evolution of prior representational idioms, varying themes and symbolic artefacts in whichever way struck an artist as effective. In this current moment, the experimental prompt has become the crucible of a trial and error much less difficult than drawing, painting or conceptual collage ever were; if however sophisticated in more nuanced ways by the semantic complexity of language. Now, we simply strike the bell of historical data with a generative hammer and observe whichever signs, wonders and discontinuously unexpected visual aesthetic resonates back to us.
