Belief systems are intricate webs of shared understanding. They anchor even the most fiercely independent or introspective identities of adversarially partisan tribalism within a vast, self-entangled tapestry of cultural and linguistic relationships. This network, this communal dance of meaning and experience, shapes our sense of self. We strive to forge an identity that feels wholly ours, a unique broadcast of the Self, yet its contours of possibility are shaped by the collective.
In this pursuit, language plays a cunning game. Like the mythical Ouroboros forever chasing its tail, our search for self-definition is a perpetual spiral. We reach for a self-sufficiency in meaning, an aspirational closure, but it remains elusive, always a step beyond grasp. The meaning we seek in words is perpetually deferred, residing in an ever-shifting horizon.
This quest for certainty, for an unshakable anchor in a sea of doubt, is paradoxical. To achieve absolute certainty is to arrive at a peculiar void – a state where the Self dissolves. In this paradox lies a profound truth: absolute certainty and the cessation of being are one and the same.
Our inner psyche, this labyrinthine structure of thought and feeling, is mirrored in the media and cultural artifacts that surround us. They are reflections of our collective struggle for meaning, echoes of our desire to define, understand, and ultimately transcend ourselves. In this modern era, where identity and meaning are more fluid than ever, we continue this dance – a dance of definition and redefinition in a world that defies absolute certainties.
In the intricate dance of belief and the multifaceted Self, we find ourselves at the mercy of an evolving process, a complex system of communication, a technological narrative. This dynamic renders our lives and the cultural communities we inhabit as realms of perpetual uncertainty, places where knowledge and identity remain forever incomplete.
Our aspiration is for closure, for clear communication, for control, and for meanings that affirm our sense of self. Yet, paradoxically, we are perpetually framed within a context of emptiness, an unresolved space that can never be fully understood or filled. This foundational void shapes our experiences and relationships, leaving us with a relentless yearning that can never be fully quenched. In this way, our pursuit of understanding and identity becomes an endless journey, marked by the elusive nature of certainty and the unattainable resolution of our deepest inquiries.
At its core, language serves as the conduit for our very being, transmitting the essence of who we are. Yet, paradoxically, this vast network of communication embeds uncertainty at the center of our cultural identity. This irony is profound: the very tools that enrich our lives with meaning and purpose also render us enigmatic, almost indefinable.
In this complex interplay, the lack of absolute certainty emerges as a unifying universal truth. The technologies and systems of communication that shape our understanding and experiences simultaneously underscore the inherent ambiguity of our existence. This conspicuous void of certainty, then, becomes the common thread that binds us, a shared acknowledgment of the elusive nature of meaning and identity in the human experience.
Our self is rendered meaningful by the conspicuously absent (as radically distributed, effectively decentralised) meaning that language requires to function. This is our enigma.

I co-wrote this with AI. Should it even matter that someone admits to this cooperative authorial engagement when – access permitting – everyone, everywhere is now using it? We are as hapless human observers in the unfortunate habit of generating taboos to prohibit such that we can then enter into reflexively self-validating relationships with the descriptions and political positions we then inhabit. Knowledge only ever truly knows itself but this doesn’t invalidate a metaphysics and conspicuously self-absent causal via negativa that also inhabits this world, it profoundly and intractably depends upon it.
