Epistemological Bootstrap

Our greatest risk may be that we each and all entertain and inhabit a reflexive abhorrence of the essential uncertainty that science is, if inadvertently, bound to generate. This, I think, represents a key misunderstanding in how we cultivate and describe theories (and technologies). The aspirational orientation towards epistemological closure, communication and control is a corollary of a core dynamical symmetry in psychological engagement with the world. If we were ever to unambiguously, comprehensively obtain explanatory closure, we would cease to exist as individuals; it is precisely the undecidable narrative incompletion of this grand endeavour that provides both it and ourselves with continuity, persistence and meaning. Some doors are not only best left unclosed, they are constitutively un-closable and the central portal (and paradox) of our own generative uncertainty is precisely the breadth and depth of an undecidable indeterminacy that can only ever haunt us with insecurity and doubt. Acknowledging this is difficult but embodies a critical waypoint in personal or collective, civilisation-scale maturity: we are chained by the narrative methods and rapidly speciating technologies of our own emancipation.

Food for thought.
