I wonder if these guys would have imagined that the horror they were living through would be repeated again on some European battlefield a little over a hundred years later. The methods and machines may have to some extent changed but the sheer insanity and grinding brutality remain quite the same. Soldiers (and civilians) suffering and dying because some mad fool think his life, his greed and his simplistic understanding of modern human history is sufficient justification to inflict this catastrophe upon millions of lives.
We just can’t seem as a species to get past the angry monkey tirades and aggressive imperialist conquests of authoritarian political leaders and their misanthropic selfish designs. Should we be more worried that this keeps happening or that at some level we allow it to happen?
