The Compass of Time

rain falls – a looking glass boulevard
of emeralds and ash
reflections orphaned in the night
by crystal sheets of soft duration

argent pain of the lotus children
alchemy dreams like snow
in silent contemplation
of an ancient emptiness

broken friends and all aspire
to a lonely lingering unity
shattered planes and shards all dark
drench your youth with time

This is a brief poem I wrote in 2001.  A week before I wrote it, a good friend had died of health-related issues.  A week after I wrote it, I had a very serious accident.  I imagine that these words here capture a certain mood or a moment, book-ended as it was by two dramatic events.  The overall feeling is of loneliness and observing emptiness in others.  The image was sourced from here:
