The cult of the leader, of single isolated points of power and control is an inevitable consequence and inversion of a fundamental social and psychological misunderstanding concerning the nature of self-hood.  We learn, and absorb, cultural and media norms associated with the notion that there is an individual point of reference, a separate self and subjective psychological entity which exists somehow divided from the world; this mistaken attribution leads us to inversely attribute consequence and significance to that Other idealised Self and focal point of political or administrative control.  The cult of the leader, of the single wise and intelligent point from which emanates all correctness and intelligent public policy – this is a very human cognitive bias.  We place our faith in this way upon the existence of an empty concept and focal point and find ourselves perennially disappointed when we discover that this is a fool’s gambit.
