Communication Complexity

Language and its corollary of narrative communication finds itself quite poorly-fit for engaging with anything other than the products and assumptions of language, as rich and diverse as they may ultimately be. This is a primary method of communication system self-replication through indefinitely extensible introspective self-reference.

We don’t often notice this because we are all so deeply entangled with the language and language-like artefacts, entities and systems that adequately negotiate themselves without ever consistently or comprehensively representing the world beyond them. The generative turn in artificial intelligence is itself curiously located in regards to a world in which we might consider language as technology (and technology as language).

The non-orientable surface of a Möbius strip also signifies a distributed topological property, recursive bootstrap and feedback loop that we find ourselves only ever able to engage in part (through words). The dynamical interdependency of “real world” complex systems are more readily illustrated in the ensemble and at scale by such topological twists than they are by language, IMHO. (Yes, we find ourselves once again ensconced back in language as soon as we try to understand or explain these things. This is something of an enigma: systems of description and communication most accurately and least reliably describe themselves and must always in some sense encounter and negotiate their own presence in the world.)
