Recuerdas

Memory is often described as a storehouse, but in practice it behaves more like a living weave. Individuals remember unevenly, cultures remember selectively, and civilisations remember strategically. What survives transmission is rarely detail and almost never balance. What persists is pattern: threat, loss, success under pressure, moments where coordination mattered and failure carried cost. Psychology supports this. Stress intensifies encoding, repetition amplifies salience, and forgetting removes surplus detail that would otherwise hinder action. At social scale the same logic appears as tradition, myth, law, and habit. These are not neutral records of events but compressed summaries of what once mattered enough to organise survival. Continuity cannot be carried by a single memory, image, or story without becoming brittle. The past is simplified so it can circulate, because only what circulates can endure.

This simplification is not a flaw. It is the mechanism of resilience. Imperfect memory permits variation without collapse, coherence without closure. Cultures persist by repeating what worked while misremembering just enough to adapt it to new conditions, and communication systems do the same, smoothing, distorting, and echoing experience until it becomes shareable. Systems that attempt total coherence concentrate memory into one frame, trading adaptability for control and collapsing difference into threat. Tyrannical forms persist for this reason: they reliably regenerate fear, aggression, and insecurity, the emotional substrates from which allegiance has historically been forged. From a metastable perspective they are efficient but pathological, placing all continuity into one basket and ensuring eventual fracture. Meaning endures differently. It emerges as a surface shaped by many imperfect passes over the same terrain, a distributed field rather than a single anchor. This is why the past does not recede. It is not an obstacle to progress but the medium through which continuity is maintained as conditions tighten and entropy presses in. Repetition under constraint produces coherence without completion, and that unfinished coherence remains the quiet engine of survival and change.
