Culture interferes because it is in orbit with itself. It does not simply move forward through time, leaving the past behind. It continually encounters delayed versions of itself: stories, slogans, laws, rituals, images, archives, national myths, economic habits, institutional reflexes, and now platform-mediated reflections of its own behaviour. These returning signals are never identical to their source. They arrive altered, compressed, exaggerated, monetised, mocked, weaponised, or sentimentalised. When they recombine with the present, they produce interference patterns.
The phrase cultural interferometry is being used here deliberately, but provisionally. It is not being offered as a new discipline, branded method, or proprietary tool. It is a useful temporary name for a pattern of thought: when separated or delayed signals recombine, their differences become visible as interference. In optical interferometry, this is a technical procedure. Here, it is an analogy with enough structure to be useful and enough instability to remain honest.
This is the first claim of cultural interferometry. Culture is not best read only by asking what its symbols mean. It is also read by asking what recurring structure causes those symbols to return with force. A slogan, conspiracy theory, viral image, political insult, or national fantasy is not simply a message. It is a trace of a field. It tells us something about the hidden arrangement of tensions, absences, repetitions, and recognitions that made its recurrence likely.
The point is not that culture is literally light, or that society can be reduced to a clean technical diagram. The point is more modest and more useful. Interferometry measures hidden difference by splitting a signal, allowing its paths to diverge, and recombining them so that small changes appear as visible patterns. Holography matters here only as a neighbouring intuition. A hologram records an interference pattern that does not resemble the object directly, yet can help reconstruct the field from which it came. Culture often behaves similarly: its visible traces are not confessions, but patterned residues.
This matters for disinformation because falsehood rarely travels as naked error. It travels as recognition. It gives a group a way to see itself, to identify an enemy, to simplify a complex field, to convert uncertainty into belonging, or to turn institutional opacity into narrative certainty. The false claim is the surface event. The deeper event is recurrence under pressure.
Cultural interferometry does not begin by asking whether a signal is sincere, true, or false. It asks why this signal returns, why it returns here, and why it returns with force.
A human identity works this way at smaller scale. A person does not become intelligible to themselves in isolation. Identity is returned through names, memories, photographs, family roles, documents, institutions, conversations, refusals, permissions, records, obligations, and screens. The self meets versions of itself that are not itself, yet without those reflections it cannot fully stabilise as a self. Lacan’s mirror stage is one famous version of this structure: the self becomes legible through an exterior image, which is both enabling and displaced (Lacan, 2006).
Culture scales this relation. A civilisation becomes legible to itself through exteriorised versions of itself: myth, media, bureaucracy, enemy-image, archive, machine output, platform feed, institutional statement, public ritual, and crisis. These reflections are not the culture itself, but they help produce the continuity through which culture recognises itself. Identity is not permanence. It is recurrent self-relation stable enough to appear continuous from within.
Language deepens the problem. Language gives temporary coherence the grammar of permanence. It names a moving relation as though it were a stable thing. A nation, identity, grievance, class, enemy, platform, institution, or public mood can appear as an object because language grants it a boundary. But language does not contain the world. The world contains language. Meaning is not sealed inside words. Meaning is the recurrent stability of relation across transformation.
Meaning is invariance under transformation. A word means because enough of its pattern survives change, delay, translation, misuse, repetition, conflict, and return. A culture coheres because enough recurrence survives across generations, media systems, rituals, and institutional forms. Some invariances last minutes. Some last centuries. The longer they endure, the more easily they are mistaken for essence.
Platform communication systems exploit this confusion without needing to understand it. Platforms select for repeatable, emotionally charged, low-friction signals. They favour what can be copied, compressed, reacted to, recombined, and circulated. But low friction in the signal is not low friction in the world. What moves easily through the platform may move heavily through lived experience. Compression lowers the cost of transmission while raising the cost of interpretation, correction, trust, and repair.
This is one of the central inversions. Low friction as structure often becomes high friction as experience. A slogan is easy to circulate because it is simple, repeatable, and emotionally loaded. But the simplification it performs may deposit complexity elsewhere: in grievance, suspicion, administrative paralysis, social fragmentation, institutional distrust, or political capital. The platform removes resistance from the signal path, but the displaced resistance returns inside the culture.
Under these conditions, disinformation is not merely inserted into a public sphere. It is phase-locked into existing cultural rhythms. It attaches to structures already waiting for amplification. The more easily a signal moves, the more likely it is to detach from the conditions that would otherwise slow, qualify, test, or contextualise it. Friction has not disappeared. It has changed location.
This is why platform populism is the prime case for cultural interferometry. Populism converts grievance, simplification, belonging, betrayal, humiliation, and revenge into repeatable public forms. Platforms then accelerate those forms. The result is not merely persuasion. It is entrainment. People begin to recognise themselves through the recurrence of signals that have been tuned for reaction.
Volatility follows. A claim becomes a meme. A meme becomes a badge. A badge becomes an identity cue. An identity cue becomes a test of loyalty. A test of loyalty becomes a political reality. By the time anyone asks whether the original claim was true, the signal has already done much of its work. It has sorted people, intensified affiliation, identified enemies, and strengthened the recurrence pattern.
Consider the familiar structure of an anti-elite slogan. Its power rarely depends on one precise factual claim. It works because it compresses a much wider field: distrust of institutions, lived experience of exclusion, resentment toward managerial language, suspicion of expertise, economic insecurity, and the desire for a more direct form of belonging. The slogan is small because the field behind it is large. It travels because it gives many different frustrations one repeatable shape.
This does not mean truth is irrelevant. It means truth is not the only dimension of the problem. Disinformation succeeds when falsehood becomes structurally useful. It offers a simplified pathway through complexity. It gives anxiety a shape. It converts uncertainty into participation. It gives people a signal they can repeat in order to know where they stand.
Cultural interferometry asks a different kind of question. Not only: is this claim true? Not only: who benefits? Not only: which actor spread it? Those questions remain necessary. But it also asks: what cultural structure made this signal resonant? What is recurring here? What is missing? What contradiction cannot resolve? What identity is being mirrored back to itself? What stored history is being activated?
This is where the relation to recurrence and harmonic structure matters. In technical terms, the Wiener–Khinchin theorem relates autocorrelation and spectral structure: recurrence across time corresponds to structure in the frequency domain (Wiener, 1930; Khinchin, 1934). We do not need to drag the whole mathematical apparatus into cultural analysis. The useful intuition is enough: recurrence is not trivial repetition. Recurrence can disclose hidden order. A system that repeatedly encounters versions of itself begins to show structure.
Culture is such a system. It remembers through repetition. It stores energetic history in forms: institutions, rituals, phrases, monuments, bureaucratic procedures, genres, resentments, jokes, myths, interfaces. Structure is stored energetic history. A cultural form carries traces of the work required to produce and maintain it. Assembly theory offers a nearby scientific analogy here: complex objects may be defined partly by the formation histories required to produce them, rather than only by their present components (Sharma et al., 2023). The cultural extension must be cautious, but the analogy is useful. A complex cultural object cites its history by existing.
Disinformation, then, is not only a pollution of the information environment. It is a diagnostic event. It reveals which forms are easily reactivated, which absences remain load-bearing, which contradictions are waiting for a carrier, and which identities are seeking recognition through simplified reflection. The falsehood is the spark; the recurrence field is the fuel.
This also explains why correction often fails. A factual correction addresses the proposition, but the proposition may not be the deepest attachment point. The signal may be doing identity work, group work, resentment work, comic work, mythic work, or anti-institutional work. To correct the claim without understanding the recurrence pattern is to mistake the visible fringe for the hidden field.
Cultural interferometry does not replace journalism, fact-checking, legal accountability, platform governance, or political analysis. It gives them a deeper diagnostic layer. It says: look at the pattern of recurrence. Look at the timing. Look at the symbols that keep returning. Look at what becomes easier to say than to think. Look at what the platform rewards before anyone decides what the public believes.
Platform populism is cultural self-interference under algorithmic acceleration. The platform does not break culture from the outside. It accelerates culture’s recursive encounter with itself. Past signals return faster, harder, cheaper, and with fewer stabilising delays. Myth meets feed. Resentment meets metric. Identity meets performance. Institution meets suspicion. Language meets compression. The result is volatility mistaken for democratic immediacy.
The danger is not only that people believe false things. The deeper danger is that communicative systems learn which distortions make culture most reactive to itself. Once that happens, disinformation is no longer an occasional contaminant. It becomes a method of tuning the field. Low-friction signals become high-friction realities.
Culture interferes because it is in orbit with itself. Platforms do not create that orbit; they accelerate it until recurrence becomes volatility.
