dysfunctionally human

Cultivated indifference is the flip-side of social media volatility. Insecurity may be expensive but gullibility is free.

People are content to react, to be swept away in moments of passion, fear, or fury. Understanding why the world is as it is, why people are as they are, has less immediate, visceral value than simply existing within it. This is not new, but we find ourselves now in a world wildly gyrating and spinning out of control precisely because the cultivated indifference of technologically mediated humanity is a neurological attractor state. Indifference is not merely an attitude; it becomes a default cognitive groove reinforced by technology, emotion, attention, and social feedback. Regardless that this indifference tends, on the whole, to reproduce the conditions of its own self-validation, I am not entirely certain how we will collectively negotiate this difficult civilisational bottleneck of self-inflicted, emotionally volatile, politically seductive, and hormonally satisfying dysfunction.
