If this is how it all ends, in vast conflagration and the catastrophic unravelling of planetary life, how terribly sad that billions of years of evolution should have brought us to this grotesque absurdity, where a frightened, confused and spectacularly greedy species, scarcely able to comprehend the extraordinary complexity of its own existence, threatens to destroy what none of us created and none of us can replace, all in pursuit of wealth, ownership and power that exist largely as collective fictions sustained through language, law and our apparently inexhaustible willingness to mistake the things we have imagined for the world itself.
