Men fancy themselves asserting power as Kings but as mere arrogant pawns are all too soon spent upon a battlefield rushed into without thought, ruined by hidden rules rarely understood and – in hasty passions of unthinking desire – that are often ignored. The Queen remains the most powerful piece and in her silent, swift subtlety and devilishly-clever intelligence, she is always the compass and arc from and through which all chequered destinies are measured. Her true art lies in allowing the King to think that he is anything other than an inconstant fool while she smiles and all the while leads him around by his hollow lust, like a stubborn bull drawn by the brass ring in his nose to an unknowing slaughter.
