The notion of individuality, of subjectivity and difference in fashion is an exhibition and cultivation of an interior surface of self. As opposed to donning a uniform of conformity, this is a uniform of identity. The assumption and value of that interior surface of self as manifest externally is merely another kind of uniform. We are expected to align ourselves in so many ways to existing conventions and in the notion that we should each express individuality of component configuration within those normative self-definitions, we can observe an ongoing metamorphosis and evolution of the cultural logic of reference, of identity and of information.
Aspirations to difference and self-individuation through fashion, personal taste or behaviour are really just an evolution of tribal identity and group membership. Belonging to a group that does not belong to a group by virtue of adaptively-defined expressions and experiences of individuality is still to belong to a group.
