Context: Vulnerable machines could be smarter ones
Complex systems not only natively possess but also harness, amplify and cultivate the uncertainty and ambiguity (as indefinite extensibility) that forever haunts all mechanical or, indeed, analytical approaches to emulating them. A curious symmetry exists within rationality in that it constructs its object as method of reflexive self-validation and (there) finds sufficient psychological and cultural self-validation in the hyper-inflating structure and dialects (as much as dialectic) of logic or technology that emerge that it need never ask the kinds of questions that Melanie Mitchell often ponders. This is precisely why her perspective is so valuable and, in a retrospective genealogy of influence and significance, why Douglas Hofstadter‘s conceptual unorthodoxy deserves more attention in the broader AI community than it has generally received.
