We no longer merely subscribe to technologies. We subscribe to versions of ourselves that technologies can recognise, process and sell. The modern self must be rendered into something machine-readable: a profile, a preference set, a location history, a purchasing pattern, an opinion stream, a catalogue of affiliations and carefully curated public performances. Identity has become an administrative burden carried inside the skull.
This is no longer self-expression in any ordinary sense. It is the continual labour of maintaining a technically legible self across systems that never stop asking who we are, what we want, where we have been, and whether we would like to upgrade. We produce ourselves repeatedly for platforms whose business is not understanding us, but predicting us; influencing our behaviour and belief in ways that optimise marketable digital throughput.
You could call it brainwashing, but even that diagnosis arrives as just another product competing for attention. It appears between advertisements, sponsored outrage, dietary supplements, investment advice and the latest explanation for why civilisation is collapsing. Criticism becomes content. Resistance becomes branding. Every warning is absorbed by the marketplace it warns against until dissent itself acquires a subscription tier.
Social media is gluttonous from every direction. Subscribers consume one another while administrators harvest the behavioural residue. We mistake exposure for connection, visibility for significance, optimisation for meaning. Everyone is consuming. Nobody seems particularly well-nourished.
The most unsettling part is that almost nobody intended this. No grand conspiracy was required. Only millions of ordinary incentives quietly aligning until human attention became the most valuable raw material on Earth. We now spend extraordinary amounts of intelligence engineering systems that steadily reduce the amount of intelligence available to resist them.
The exit closed its steel doors some time ago. You can still delete the app, provided you remember the password, authenticate through another app, verify your identity, accept the terms and conditions, and explain to the corporation why you no longer wish to participate in systems designed to make leaving feel irrational, to prefabricate human experience as commodity and data harvest.
This technologically-mediated subscription to ourselves renews automatically, apparently, but the lives and worlds we collectively build and sustain this way – they are not at all our own.
