[00] Disinformation Dynamics: Introduction to the Handbook

Communication has never been more central to human civilisation, yet understanding communication has become increasingly fragmented. Research is distributed across disciplines concerned with language, psychology, sociology, political science, media studies, cybernetics, information theory, network science and computer science. Each contributes important insights, but each also examines communication from its own perspective, often treating different aspects of the same underlying phenomenon as separate problems.

This handbook begins from a different premise. Rather than taking messages, information or disinformation as the primary object of analysis, it treats persistent communicative organisation as the phenomenon requiring explanation. Individual communications are transient. They are created, interpreted and forgotten. Communication itself persists. Explaining that persistence provides the foundation upon which the remainder of this handbook is built.

A central consequence of this perspective is that information and disinformation are not produced by fundamentally different communicative systems. Both emerge through the same relational processes of variation, selection, reinforcement and adaptation. They differ in their epistemic, ethical and social consequences, but not in the underlying dynamics through which communicative organisation persists. Persistent disinformation is therefore understood not as an anomaly within communication, but as one possible organisational outcome of communication itself.

Introduction

The handbook is intended to be read sequentially. Each document establishes concepts required by the next, progressing from relational foundations to mathematical description, empirical observation, intervention, operational implementation and broader synthesis. Questions introduced in one document are answered in the next, allowing increasingly sophisticated concepts to emerge from simpler relational principles rather than being assumed at the outset.

Although the handbook develops a coherent theoretical framework, it is not intended as a closed system of thought. Throughout, the distinction between empirical observation and theoretical description is maintained. Direct observations constrain theory. Theory organises observation. Both remain subject to continual revision as communicative organisation changes and new evidence becomes available. The framework is intended as a research programme and operational methodology rather than a final theory of communication.

The objective of this handbook is not to replace existing approaches to communication, nor to prescribe what should be believed. It is to provide a common relational framework through which persistent communicative organisation may be understood across multiple disciplines and scales of analysis. By focusing on the dynamics through which communication continually reproduces, adapts and reorganises itself, the handbook seeks to establish a coherent foundation for observation, explanation, intervention and ongoing inquiry.

If successful, the contribution of this work will not lie in providing definitive answers, but in making new questions possible. A relational framework expands the range of communicative phenomena that may be understood within a common conceptual language while remaining open to empirical refinement, theoretical development and practical application. In that sense, this handbook is intended not as the conclusion of a discussion, but as the beginning of one.
