What is happening in France is interesting beyond the particular grievances involved. The protests began around education, but once a movement becomes national it creates a recurring event around which other dissatisfaction can organise.
Grievances do not need a common cause to reinforce one another. Schools, wages, public services, inequality, policing or distrust of government can have quite different histories. What matters is that they begin recurring together. Demonstrations establish a rhythm; media, political responses and social platforms reinforce it. Each recurrence changes the conditions into which the next event arrives.
This is more than grievances accumulating. Different rhythms begin interacting. Fast cycles of social-media attention meet daily news, periodic demonstrations, institutional responses and frustrations accumulated over years. An otherwise minor event can become consequential because it arrives when the larger field is already responsive. Another can disappear almost without trace.
Meaning develops within this process. Words such as neglect, inequality, betrayal or injustice begin gathering events that were previously separate. Repetition changes what those words encompass, while their growing familiarity makes further recurrence more likely. Synchronisation and meaning reinforce one another.
This also makes the system sensitive to intervention. Nobody needs to invent a protest or manufacture its grievances. Political organisations, platforms or foreign actors need only recognise where activity is already reinforcing itself. Small changes in timing, visibility or recurrence can produce effects disproportionate to the intervention itself.
AI makes that possibility more significant. Its useful capability is not simply generating propaganda. It can identify patterns across enormous communication environments: what is accelerating, what is becoming coupled, and where a small perturbation is likely to propagate.
France makes these dynamics unusually visible. Once different forms of dissatisfaction begin recurring together, the resulting pattern can acquire a persistence and direction that none could produce alone. But that direction is not predetermined: each interaction changes the probabilities of what happens next, making the process simultaneously structured and unpredictable.
