If one day we should wake up and find that every single aspect of our lives have become so deeply steeped-in and dependent-upon digital technology that we are irrevocably cast into a secondary or supporting role, should we really be surprised ? Technological extension through art, language and culture always already precedes the irreversible and reflexive adaptation of human beings to those technologies and the unfurling effervescence of historically antecedent innovations. The spectrum of technologically-enhanced cognitive extension from written word through feats of engineering and into the vastly distributed virtual engines of the current era has been accelerating and autonomously develops its own momentum and undirected purposes, surfing on the breaking crest of a wave of human existential and psychological necessity. It is neither good nor bad, it just is; and it is also already upon us.
