technological cognition and its structural unconscious

The technological system cannot perceive its full costs because that blindness is one of the conditions of its success.

The greatest achievement of technological civilisation may not be the machines it has built, but the way of seeing it has quietly taught us to accept. We increasingly understand the world as collections of objects to be measured, optimised, classified and controlled. That approach has produced extraordinary successes, and I have no interest in denying them. What concerns me is the possibility that this mode of cognition carries its own structural unconscious: not something hidden by conspiracy or bad faith, but the relational conditions it cannot readily perceive because they are the very conditions that allow it to function. Every system has limits to what it can make visible. My concern is that ours systematically backgrounds the human, social and ecological costs of its own reproduction.

This is why the evidence often feels strangely asymmetric. Technological systems produce abundant evidence of immediate success: greater productivity, faster computation, tighter coordination and enormous concentrations of wealth. The costs emerge differently. They diffuse across generations, communities, ecosystems and institutions. They appear as loneliness, anxiety, environmental degradation, political fragmentation, declining trust and lives increasingly organised around productivity rather than human flourishing. None of these phenomena alone proves that the technological mode of cognition is incomplete. But if the framework itself determines what counts as evidence, then expecting it to expose its own deepest limitations may be asking it to perform an operation its own organisation prevents it from performing.

The technological mode of cognition also carries a profound illusion of control. Every technical system abstracts a finite object from an unbounded world, identifies the variables it can measure, and treats the remainder as background. Yet every system remains embedded within a far larger field of relations, dependencies and feedback that no model or institution can fully enumerate. Those dynamics do not disappear because they are omitted. They continue to generate novelty, conflict, uncertainty and consequence. Technology does not eliminate this entropy. It metabolises it, reorganises it and reproduces it at greater speed, then expands its own machinery to manage the new instability it has helped create. The solution becomes part of the environment from which the next problem emerges.

The defining illusion of our age is not that technology can solve every problem, but that the world disclosed through technological cognition is the whole of reality. I do not believe it is. A civilisation can become extraordinarily effective at reproducing itself while becoming progressively less able to perceive the conditions upon which that reproduction depends. Its institutions can display words such as justice, truth and progress while remaining organised primarily around competition, accumulation and survival. When enough locally rational actors are joined together, the result is not collective intelligence but an impersonal machine whose consequences no one controls. Our task is not merely to build better technology, but to recover an understanding of the relations, dependencies and living systems that technology cannot fully represent, yet continually overwrites.
