outer limits: impredicativity

Every explanation of reality becomes another part of the reality left to explain:

What sustains human civilisation is almost certainly more complex than any representation civilisation can make of itself. Ecology, technology, language, institutions, infrastructure, bodies, memory, attachment and accident intersect through causal chains disappearing into scales we cannot observe and histories we cannot reconstruct. We cut boundaries through this turbulence and call the pieces systems because thought requires edges. Then, with characteristic human confidence, we forget that we made the cuts. The paradigm becomes the world, although it was always only a temporary orientation within it.

The danger begins when usefulness hardens into ontology. We take a flickering cross-section through an evolving relational field and lash ourselves to it like Odysseus to the mast, except the sirens are our own categories insisting that this is what reality really is. Paradigmatic drift merely changes the song. Kuhn rearranges the furniture, Gödel notices that the house cannot contain a complete plan of itself, and Nāgārjuna quietly asks why we were so confident there was a house in the first place. Yet something deeper keeps recurring beneath these representations: a harmonic substructure that survives their transformations without ever becoming fully identical to any of them.

And here the Trojan horse enters the house. Not as something hidden within the structure, but as the mechanism by which the structure attempts to contain its own conditions. The plan enters the house and, in entering, becomes part of what the plan must now represent. Draw it again and the drawing has become another room. The harmonic substructure is not another object concealed beneath appearances. It is recurrence across transformation: something that persists without remaining identical. Consciousness turns inward and encounters the same problem. What remains unavailable is not merely missing information. Its absence is implicated in the very possibility of illumination.

Civilisation may itself be one of these temporary coherences: a local organisation briefly capable of representing fragments of the relations sustaining it. We call forests resources, humans individuals, exchanges economies and recurrent patterns laws, then mistake these useful orientations for joints in reality. The difficulty is not simply that our representations are incomplete. Any representation sufficiently powerful to include the conditions of its own production changes the field it represents by being there. The map enters the territory. The plan enters the house. The observer enters the observation. At each turn, what looked like a problem of insufficient knowledge reappears as a property of knowing. There is always another room, not because reality is hiding it from us, but because drawing the plan is one of the things the next plan must explain.

The qualification is important: this follows under the recursive conception of explanation, where the explanatory act itself belongs to what a complete explanation must explain.

A standing wave is a useful place to begin because it looks like a thing while actually being an event. Nothing solid occupies the shape we see. Many oscillations continually interfere, reinforce and cancel one another, producing a relatively persistent form. Add feedback and something more interesting becomes possible. The pattern generated by those oscillations can return through the system and alter the conditions producing the next pattern. The fundamental frequency generates harmonics; the harmonics modify the environment of the fundamental; tension, diffusion, interference and delay become part of the machinery through which the organisation recurs. In an idealised model, this begins to resemble soliton-like behaviour: coherence maintained not despite continual change, but through it.

This suggests a useful way of thinking about complexity. A persistent system need not repeatedly reconstruct the same state. It need only reproduce enough of the relations that make another recognisably related state probable. Because feedback takes time, what returns is never precisely what departed. The system receives itself after propagation, interference and transformation. Recurrence consequently produces difference, and difference feeds the next recurrence. Complexity can sediment through this process as previous organisation becomes part of the conditions governing subsequent organisation. What looks from outside like a stable object may instead be a standing history of recursive constraint.

The ontological mischief begins when we ask where the thing actually is. Is the standing wave the fundamental frequency, its harmonics, their phase relations, the feedback loop, the medium carrying them, or the history through which the whole arrangement became stable? Remove enough of any of these and the apparent object disappears. Yet none individually is the object. Calling the persistent pattern a “thing” remains enormously useful, but its identity has diffused across processes, relations and timescales. The object has not vanished. Rather, the closer we inspect its persistence, the harder it becomes to locate the ontology we casually assigned to it.

This may be why complex (ie cognitive as thinking or intelligent) systems repeatedly frustrate attempts to find their final explanatory level. Organisms, minds, languages, institutions and civilisations may be less like elaborate machines assembled from stable pieces than like recursively maintained standing waves whose histories continually feed back into their futures. Their apparent solidity is real enough to catch a train, break a bone or start a war. But solidity need not imply ontological simplicity. What persists may be neither substance nor snapshot, but organised recurrence: a pattern continually diffusing through its own harmonic substructure, returning after delay, and becoming different enough to remain approximately itself.
