Pyrrhic Victory (n.) A triumph won at such devastating cost to the victor that it is tantamount to defeat. By extension: a situation in which short-term gains are pursued in a manner that annihilates the very foundation from which those gains are drawn. Applied sense:To turn one’s own country into a bonfire for profit — […]
Our descriptions do not contain the world. The world contains our descriptions. Politics pretends otherwise. A speech, a policy, a slogan—each frames itself as if words could sculpt reality by naming it. But language only chases the turbulence it claims to hold, like shadows trying to outpace the objects that cast them, straining toward a […]
An interesting hypothesis is that all social processes are expressions of frequency. While not strictly equivalent, frequencies can be understood as empirical expressions of probability—patterns of recurrence that approximate likelihood over time. In doing so, they engage with dynamical attractors, stabilising tendencies within complex systems that draw trajectories into patterned coherence. The very process of […]
Billy Connolly tells the story of ordering Mexican food and realising it’s all the same thing, just folded differently. He asked for something new, but it wasn’t what he expected. The waiter brought the chef, who unfolded the meal, refolded it another way, and handed it back—“There you go.” I was a postgraduate student in […]
The institutions that claim to be the guardians of knowledge—universities, governments, large corporations—have all become deeply entangled in their own logic of continuity. Universities in particular once positioned themselves as sanctuaries for critical thought, but the reality today is closer to Stafford Beer’s observation in Platform for Change (1975): organizations tend not to innovate, they […]
We keep lying to ourselves about stability. The polite story is that systems aim for balance, that institutions exist to keep things steady, that culture and politics and technology are here to make life manageable. But none of that is quite true. Things don’t hold together because they are stable in any simple sense. They […]
We didn’t build technology to serve us; we built it to be served. Every notification, every post, every frictionless interaction is not the system making life easier—it’s the system making you easier to interpret. You aren’t just using the platform; you are formatting yourself into it. Your choices, your moods, your attention spans are being […]
It seems increasingly clear that the American governance system—despite its democratic branding—shares a structural affinity with autocracy. Its mechanisms are optimized for control, continuity, and symbolic legitimacy rather than participatory agency. Alexis de Tocqueville warned of this trajectory, describing a tendency toward soft despotism: not through overt tyranny, but via layers of paternalistic administration and […]
Attention at scale is volumetric—recursive, entropic, structural. You don’t transmit clean signals through this system. You fracture attention, saturate the surface with rhythmic displacement, let the structure self-propagate. The topological field—as exponentiated relation of relations—holds tension, not messages. Meaning flickers, but drift sustains. Influence emerges as deformation, interference, long slow-wave gradients of entropic drift. You […]
Lists seduce us with the illusion of order—each item a shard of clarity arranged just so, hinting at mastery over the infinite. They compress the world into clean lines and neat progressions, comforting in their symmetry, irresistible in their simplicity. In a culture tuned to acceleration, these fragments multiply, not to deepen understanding but to […]
Generative AI systems provide an interface to the near-unbounded representational, referential and/or relationally networked complexity of ourselves, as historical data and informational or logical abstraction. We struggle cognitively and linguistically with a notion that there is no simply deterministic mapping from input to output in these tools. This is not a bug or failure, it […]
Technologically-mediated idioms of symbolic communication reflect, reflexively shape, and functionally reproduce our identities and cultures. It may be less obvious but an orientation towards certainty and regulatory control is grounded in, and validated by, a core dependence upon an effectively impossible and conspicuously absent experience of closure, certainty and control. Consequently, the pursuit of closure […]
